Project Description
Negative peer pressure has fostered harmful cliques and an alarming rise in female delinquency, depression and suicide among preteen and teen girls. The Women's Center of Jacksonville began facilitating Girls Circles because we believe that it is crucial to help girls navigate the often difficult and challenging time of pre-adolescence and adolescence. The Circles promote confidence, competence and connectedness in a safe and structured environment for girls of all socio-economic backgrounds.
During the weekly hour-long Circle, the 8-12 girls in each Circle have the opportunity to share positive peer experiences under the guidance of a skilled professional facilitator.
Critical thinking is fostered by examining behaviors and the girls gain a greater awareness of their options to make choices that are consistent with their values, interests, and talents.
Circles have been shown to reduce delinquency, increase success in school and guide and support girls to make healthy choices and wise decisions.
