Project Description

Pianist and raconteur John Thomas will present one-hour concerts at Duval County Senior Centers as part of the Senior Life Foundation's 10th Anniversary Celebration. Playing songs from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, John will bestow the gifts of good music, laughter, and good memories.

Research confirms that music wields power over our emotions, improves focus, helps us to learn, and encourages socialization. These much-anticipated events will enrich seniors' lives and engage them in dialogue with their peers and the pianist about what was happening in the world and their own lives when the music was popular. As a lasting gift, the piano in each senior center will be tuned. The budget for each concert is $1,500, with $250 for expenses and $1,250 to assist seniors in crisis through the Senior Life Foundation's emergency helpline (904-268-9128). John is donating his time and talents.

Our clients are Duval County residents, 60 years of age or older with a total household income of $1,000 or less per month, who live independently in their own home or apartment. Last year, the Senior Life Foundation assisted 223 seniors and paid out over $65,000. Because the Senior Life Foundation is all-volunteer, 96 percent of donations go directly to resolve the crises of senior citizens in our community.

The Senior Life Foundation's mission is to respond rapidly to low-income seniors who are faced with a crisis so they can remain in their own home or apartment and live out the winter of their lives in dignity and independence. We do this by developing community and corporate sponsors to raise funds and by channeling those funds to at-home seniors in crisis and occasionally to those local organizations which most effectively help seniors stay in their homes (e.g., Meals on Wheels). Crises range from the need for an emergency prescription, to repairing a hot water heater or stove, to building a handicap accessible wheelchair ramp, or even helping with rent to avert eviction.
