Project Description
DEEN Development Corporation is requesting sponsorship monies to continue its “Beat Diabetes Class” at DEEN Wellness Center. The program includes three mini-courses that are 30 minutes in duration with rotational intervals for of each group of participants and consists of diabetes, exercise, nutrition and cooking demonstration with certified experts, trainers, and chefs.
There are plenty of statistics available that prove diabetes is at an epidemic level in minority communities. The number of diabetic adults has tripled over the years, but when we add the obesity statistics together, the problem becomes unparallel. Medical physicians agree that adults are not eating the right kinds of foods and are exercising less than ever on a daily basis. The combination of fast food diets along with sedentary lifestyles is creating a generation of adults who are facing diabetic issues. As a result, DEEN Development Corporation is serving diabetic adults in Zone 1 of the Duval County Health Department, March 2008, Statistical Study which has the largest number of minority residents by introducing a 6 week class that meets every Tuesday at 6:30 to 8:00 pm.
DEEN’s “Beat Diabetes Class” hopes to change the trend with the increasing rate of adults with diabetes in Zone 1 of Duval County Health Department, March 2008, by educating adults to accept their responsibility for changing their lifestyles. These adults must identify the problems and customize their eating habits and accommodate their specific nutritional and physical activity needs.
The class will teach them that fast food has taken a toll on their health because of eating high calorie foods, to cook nutritionally balanced meals, and eliminating snacks high in fat and sugar, teaching portion control, packing healthy lunches, avoiding fast food and helping them to increase levels of physical activity.
Finally, the objectives of DEEN are to help pre and post diabetic adults become experts at identifying the problems and developing a plan to help themselves and their families become healthier. This means creating a step-by-step program of sound understand of diabetes, good nutrition and exercise.
