Project Description

Each year we expose the girls of the Journey Into Womanhood (JIW) Program to college tours both at Jacksonville colleges and with a college tour outside of Jacksonville. For some, this is their first time visiting a new city. The young girls from Journey Into Womanhood must earn this trip by improving school grades and working on personal goals.

The Journey Into Womanhood Program is a 25 week program for girls ages 9-17 – most of whom live in at-risk neighborhoods in Jacksonville. This unique and inspiring program cultivates young ladies in their “Journey into Womanhood”, as well as focuses on increasing their self-awareness, developing leadership skills and teaching them life skills. Currently, there are 40 young women participating in the program. Since 2002, 97% of the “JIW” graduates have attended college.

This program year we plan to Orlando, Florida to visit the University of Central Florida and Rollins College. While visiting the colleges, students will learn about the admissions process, seek college life, as well as meet with college leadership and civic groups.
